This famous haiku was composed by Matsuo Bashō on May 13 of the lunar calendar in 1689, when he visited Takadate in Hiraizumi Town, Iwate Prefecture, Japan. In Takadate, Minamoto no Yoshitsune and the Fujiwara clan died in battle 500 years before Bashō's visit." Natsukusa(夏草)" is a symbol of fragile grass that grows and withers in the short period of summer. The "soldiers(兵ども)" are "Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his retainer, Musashibō Benkei, who flourished in Hiraizumi under the Fujiwara clan.

This work was created because "water lilies," which bloom beautifully in summer, are known as a symbol of "enlightenment" in Buddhism, the religion of many Japanese, and Matsuo Bashō, a well-known Japanese poet, liked to write haiku about water lilies.
