Sempervivum montanum

Succulent Perennials
Time: June-August

Scientific name: Sempervivum montanum
English name: Mountain Housleek
Japanese name: KUMONOSU BANDAI SOU
Family name: Crassulaceae
Genus: Sempervivum

This perennial herb is native to the mountainous regions of southern Europe, ranging from the Pyrenees in the west to the Carpathians in the east (mountain ranges in central and eastern Europe). It is found at altitudes of around 1,500 to 3,000 m above sea level, in rocky or gullied terrain (said to be common in acid rocky areas), and the grass is 5 to 20 cm tall.
At the top of the stem are 10 to 15 reddish-purple, pointed petals about 1 cm long, with 3 to 8 flowers per stem.

The name Sempervivum has its origin in the Latin semper ("always") and vivus ("living") because this perennial plant keeps its leaves in winter and is very resistant to difficult conditions of growth. Other common names reflect the plant's ancient association with Thor, the Norse god of thunder, and the Roman Jupiter, hence names such as "Jupiter's beard" and the German Donnerbart ("thunder beard").
