A perennial herb of the taro family, it is a poisonous plant. It bears red berries in autumn and is known as "snake torchlight."
The roots are edible in the Ainu culture. According to Ainu tradition, the bulbs are dug up in late fall, the poisonous part in the center of the root is removed, and the bulbs are cooked and eaten. However, be careful not to eat it before the toxic part has matured, or you may experience numbness in your mouth. The root is grated and used as a poultice for painful areas, and the seeds are taken as a medicine for stomachaches.
