September Ezo Squirrel
Collection: Obihiro Shinto Shrine, Hokkaido, Japan
<Series 2 : September Ezo Squirrel >
One day in late autumn, the forest of Obihiro Shrine in Hokkaido. Sunlight filtering through trees was shining leaves fallen on the ground.

There is a large walnut tree along the road approaching a shrine, and the fruits that fall from the tree rot under the fallen leaves and eventually become walnut seeds, which are important food for the Ezo Squirrels.  The Ezo Squirrels who live in this forest move around on the ground and are busy collecting ingredients to prepare for winter. They skillfully find the walnut seeds buried in the hummus, add the blackened walnuts, and carry them into their burrows.

Wood nuthatch puts the morning glory seeds in its mouth and gets to its own burrow at full speed.

The episodes being unfolded by the shrine forest residents, such as above, give people who visit a shrine a "smile" and "peace of mind."

In the shrine's forest, by the pond with the stone pagoda, a woman looked up at the sky and was chanting sutras with all their heart.  A shrine is also a place where Buddhists can think about the well-being of the world.
