There is a rule that the festival must be carried out according to an "old customary practice" and a "formal" style that has been handed down for 1,200 years. This festival is also known as the Gota festival, ゴタ祭 (Gota-matsuri); the Japanese word "Gota" means "some trouble" because one mistake in the progress of the event can lead to trouble among the townspeople.
Shinbashi, 神橋, is one of the cultural properties that make up the World Heritage Site "Shrines and Temples of Nikkō" in Japan. It is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. It is part of the grounds of Nikkō Futarasan Shrine, and beyond the bridge is the approach to Nikkō Tōshōgu Shrine. In the past, only Shōgun, 将軍, and Yamabushi, 山伏, were allowed to pass through.
