日光弥生祭 (Ⅱ)
Nikkō Yayoi festival

Yayoi festival, 弥生祭 (Yayoi-sai), held in Nikkō City, is an annual festival of the Nikkō Futarasan Shrine, 日光二荒山神社. It is one of the traditional Japanese events that herald the arrival of spring in Nikkō. Yayoi festival is a historic festival that has been held since around the Nara period (710-794) and is held over five days from April 13 to 17 every year. Since the Covid-19 outbreak, the festival has been carried out on a reduced scale.

Location: Nikko City, Tochigi prefecture, Japan. April 2016

The highlight of the festival is the last day, the 17th. People from each town in the east and west of Nikkō City will bring out floats decorated with artificial flowers, シオツツジ (Shiotsutsuji), in spring-like colors. Musicians, 囃子方 (Hayashikata), on the floats play the festival music, 弥生ばやし (Yayoibayashi), and head for Futarasan Shrine.

In this series, I introduced the scene of the floats being pulled and the shrine parishioners relaxing in the precincts of Futarasan Shrine.
