Dendrocopos major hondoensis

"Dendrocopos major hondoensis" is a subspecies of Dendrocopos major and is found in Hokkaido. The male's posterior head is stained red, making it easy to distinguish between male and female. It is often found alone, but sometimes two males and two females can be seen together. Males and females dig cavities in dead trees or large branches for their nests. They often drill holes in the same tree, with the male doing more work than the female.
